EMR Silverthorn has a heritage of providing industrial motors for many unique and specialist applications, amongst these applications EMR has supplied motors for a myriad of blockbuster movies including:
Who Framed Roger Rabbit – Harry Potter – The Mummy – Tomb Raider – Black Hawk Down
Cliff Hanger – Lord of the Rings – Mission Impossible – Gulliver’s Travels – War Horse – and many Bond Movies.
The following are two examples of the use of EMR Silverthorn’s products in the film industry.
EMR have recently supplied 6 x18.5KW Invertek Drives and geared brake motors to the Special Effects team on the new blockbuster (All you need is kill )that has recently completed shooting at Warner Brothers Leavesden studios near Watford. EMR supplied the correctly specified motors on time and on budget and when controlled by the Invertek drives the precise control required was achieved. The SFX team were assisted by Invertek technical staff to achieve the stunning effects required for the movie.
We believe release is scheduled for late 2013.
This hugely successful World War 1 epic film was shot mainly on location in the UK and featured in many scenes was the imposing Windmill. Steven Spielberg demanded that the Windmill be just as authentic as the rest of the movie, when it was built with sails weighing in at some 4 tonne!
Well as you can imagine 4 Ton of sails take a lot of starting and turning, add to this that the only sound allowed was the war torn canvass flapping in the breeze, the special effects team turned to EMR Silverthorn for a solution. EMR supplied the powerful SEW geared motor that was controlled via an ABB ACS550 inverter drive, and the bespoke shaft and coupling which turned the sails in complete and total silence, the motor and drive allowed Spielberg to focus on directing whilst the motor turned effortlessly in silence.
One of the requirements for the Mission Impossible movie was for a powerful fan that would provide the illusion that the fight scene on the top of a Eurostar train was actually filmed in full flight. EMR provided a powerful 250KW fan and controls that simulated the power of 130 mile an hour wind speed on top of the train.
